It took the DISPLACED experience to fully realize how to use abstract visual language to translate a surfing wipeout. The WIPEOUT Series expresses the muted sight of the wave’s energy during a wipeout. It’s timed chaos that can pass in a few seconds and it can be a spiritual experience. My Wipeout Series is about underwater experiences, the forces of nature, and seeks to communicate moments of equanimity in chaos.
I use a surfing wipeout as a metaphor for life: the chaos/uncertainty/powerlessness that can inevitably arise. Both surfing and life’s challenges take courage, knowledge, and trust. Sometimes you fall, and when you do, know there may be unpleasant turbulence. Relax, hold your breath, and let it pass. Eventually, you will emerge. I think of the wipeout as the most vulnerable part of surfing, and this series celebrates having the courage to fall and get back up.
